God's creation of life leads us to marvel at his power and majesty. Close study of this creation only causes this feeling of wonder to grow. Our study of the findings of modern biological science never loses sight of the truth of creation.

Key topics of our study include:

  • The Nature of Biology
  • Ecology
  • Biology of the Cell
  • Genetics
  • A Christian Study of Evolution
  • Survey of the Living World
  • Introduction to Human Anatomy and Physiology

Instructional Materials

Bring these things to class each day:

  • textbook
  • spiral notebook
  • interest and enthusiasm

Grading

Grading in biology is done on the points system. Each test, project or assignment is worth a certain number of points.

  • chapter tests (100 pts.; We will often cover two chapters per test.)
  • chapter work
    - end of chapter reviews (20 pts.)
    - chapter quizzes (points vary, but usually 20-50 pts.)
  • lab work (points vary)
  • semester projects (points vary)
    - details given in class, each semester there will be a number of individual and group projects
  • 90%+ of total points is an "A", 80-89% is a "B", etc. Tests will always account for over half the quarter grade
  • semester grades are 40% for each quarter grade, and 20% semester exam

How to Succeed in Biology

Here are some wise words to help you get the most from your experience in biology:

  • take thorough class notes
  • read the assigned textbook pages each day - supplement your notes from your reading to make concepts clearer to you
  • review your notes daily- daily review is much more effective than massive last minute study; concentrate on terms, structures and their functions, and major concepts
  • be an active participant in class; ask questions when something is unclear to you; do assigned homework as soon as possible, this will give you more time to ask questions or seek help
  • don't wait till the last minute on special projects

Course Policies

Late Work - Per the school handbook policy, you are entitled to one day of grace for each day that you were absent with no penalty. Other late work is docked 10% of the total assignment points. I won't pester you about late assignments, take the responsibility to get them in promptly.

Absences - When you are absent, it is you responsibility to get the information and assignment from that day. Use the calendar on this web site while you are at home. Then verify assignments and copy notes when you return. Remember, absences are the biggest obstacle to success in school.
