Natural Range
As its name implies, this species of yellowjacket was first native to Europe. However, it has been accidentally introduced into Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, North America, northern Africa, and Argentina. It is a common picnic pest in southern California.

Interesting Facts
This species of yellowjacket is attracted to meat, which is why they often show up where they are not wanted... at picnics or during lunch at the picnic tables. After being introduced to the West Coast in the early 1990s, the German yellowjacket quickly spread throughout the West.
