What is this all about?

The fourth annual C-Hawk Spectacular dinner and auction is scheduled for Saturday, April 26, 2008. Proceeds from this event will go to enrich the technology available for students at California Lutheran High School and to provide funds for tuition assistance. The theme for this year is C-Hawk Cyber Cafe.

This goal of this particular project is to auction off one million pixels at one cent each. If all available pixels are sold, we will have raised $10,000 for technology at CLHS.

What's a pixel?

A pixel is an individual point of color on your screen that makes the images you see. The grid image on the homepage is 1000 pixels by 1000 pixels for a total of one million pixels.

What do we get for our money?

Pixel blocks are available in square or rectangular shapes of 1000 or more pixels. (Each side should be a multiple of 10...just to make it easy on us!) Each block will have three features:

  1. The image on the block -You can send us the image, or tell us the color and text you would like, and we'll create it for you.
  2. A hyperlink - If you have a school, church, business, or personal web site you'd like to link to—we'll make your block a hyperlink. Clicking on your block will take visitors to your site.
  3. Hover text - When a visitors mouse pointer passes over your block, up to 50 characters of text will appear. Just tell us what you want to say!

What could some of these pixel blocks look like?

Images and links would of course have to be appropriate to be displayed on our school web site. Below are some samples of what some blocks could look like. Obviously, the more pixels in your block, the more creative you can be.

1000 pixels ($10)
2500 pixels ($25)
10,000 pixels ($100)

Who can purchase pixels?

We aren't promoting this project outside our own circles. We're looking for support primarily from elementary schools and classrooms, alumni, current students and staff, churches, businesses associated with our high school, etc.

How do we place an order?

Start collecting your pennies. Once you are ready to place an order, send an email to pfp@clhs-chawks.org including the following:

  1. Sponsor name - the name of the individual, classroom, school, etc. who is purchasing the space.
  2. Amount of donation - Let us know the amount of your donation. Please send whole dollar donations of $10 or more. This will make it easier for us to place your ad. You can mail a check to the address below, or deliver it to the school office. Make sure it is marked for "Pennies for Pixels".
  3. Image to be used - attach the image (in .gif, .png, or .jpg format) to your email. If you aren't able to produce it yourself send us a description (text, color, dimensions, etc.) and any images you would like us to use. We'll do the best that we can!
  4. Link URL - The web address (i.e. www.clhs-chawks.org) to which you would like your pixels to link.
  5. Hover text - Indicate the text you would like to appear when a mouse pointer passes over your pixels. Try to keep this text to 50 characters or less, please.
  6. Location for your pixels (optional) - Tell us where you'd like the upper left corner of your pixels to be placed. The small squares on the grid are 100 pixels. The grid shows 100x100 small squares. The locations are numbered from 1-100, from left to right and from top to bottom. If you send us the location (40, 70), the upper left corner of your image would be placed 40 squares from the left and 70 squares from the top. We can't guarantee that someone won't claim your space first, but we will place it as close as we can to your chosen location.

We will start working on your pixel block when we receive your email. Yes! We trust that the check is in the mail!

What types of pixel blocks are envisioned?

We expect your creativity to far surpass our imaginations, but here are some that we have thought of:

  • church, school, or classroom blocks

  • birthday wishes for a milestone birthday

  • mark an anniversary

  • congratulate a graduate

  • say thanks to a favorite teacher

  • show that your business supports CLHS

  • show your alumni pride in your graduating class

  • recall a favorite championship season or concert

  • post Mr. Faust's high school senior portrait (it's available for a price!)

  • mark the birth of a grandchild

  • propose marriage...well, maybe there are better ways to do that!

  • there are a million possibilities!

When will this project end?

The easy answer is: When all the pixels have been sold! We would, however, like to set the tentative deadline as Saturday, April 26, 2008—the date of the C-Hawk Cyber Cafe live auction. We hope to sell a few pixels that night as well. We accept orders for pixels until the last one has been purchased.

How long will this site be active?

We will keep the Pennies for Pixels site active and linked from the CLHS website for a minimum of five years. It is very likely that this site will remain as long as CLHS continues to have a web presence, which God-willing will be a long time!

I still don't get it...

Think of it as a big patch-work quilt of links and images that can connect all manner of things related to CLHS. The more participation there is, the more interesting it will be. Check the counter on the main page to see how much traffic we get. The counter started at zero on March 10, 2008.
